TBAWA Umpire Training and Accreditation
Like most junior sports, Teeball depends on parents and volunteers to serve as umpires. The TBAWA offers a comprehensive training program along with valuable resources to assist and support our Teeball umpires.

Level 1 Umpire Accreditation
The Level 1 Accreditation is a 2 part process.
Step 1: Enrol and complete the online free theory course here :https://www.tbawa.com.au/courses

Level 1 Umpire Assessment Clinic terms and conditions
- There will be approximately 6 metro Level 1 practical umpire assessment clinics. These clinics will be hosted by clubs spread around the metro area and dates and venues can be found on the Umpiring Clinics webpage of this website. All dates will be posted by August are are mainly in October.
- To be eligible to attend a Level 1 umpire clinic, the participant must be 12 years of age at the time of doing a clinic.
- Participants must be in attendance and ready to start by the scheduled clinic start time (usually 8.30am)
- Practical course bookings are only available through the online booking system.
- Once a participant has successfully passed the course, the Chief umpire will issue a unique umpire registration number to that specific participant.
- Successful particpants will be given an umpire ‘green’ shirt and Accredited cap.
- Clubs will be Invoiced $40 for each Level 1 Umpire Clinic Participant.
- Clubs will be Invoiced $40 for each ‘No Show’ who does not cancel their place with the Chief Umpire beforehand.
Level 2 Umpire Accreditation
- Subject to demand, an Advanced practical training course will be run for existing Level 1 umpires who wish to further their knowledge and are looking at becoming Level 2 Accredited. Any upcoming advanced umpire clinics will be listed here: https://www.tbawa.com.au/be-involved/as-an-umpire/clinic-datetimes/ and must be registered before attending. Attending this clinic is not compulory to attain Level 2 accreditation.
- To Attain Level 2, participants need to pass an online multiple choice theory exam and are then assessed on a practical level while plate umpiring an U11’s or above game. It is strongly suggested, but not compulsory, that prospective level 2 umpires attend a level 1 clinic first as the level 1 course teaches what is expected within the level 2 practical assessment.
- Interested umpires are encouraged to do the Online Practical Quiz as many times as nessesary which is similiar to the Exam.
- To sit the Online Level 2 Exam, send an email to the Chief umpire (chiefumpire@tbawa.org.au) requesting a username and password.
- Once this has been passed, liase with the Chief Umpire to organise a practical assessment.
- Upon successful completion of the level 2 exam you have up to three attempts in 12 months in which to complete your practical examination.
- Requests for a practical examination MUST be emailed to chiefumpire@tbawa.org.au.
State Championships Umpire Accreditation
- All Base and Plate umpires officiating at the TBAWA State Championships, irrespective of Level must hold a State Championships accreditation which expires and must be re-done very 3 years.
- Minimum age for an SCA is 15 at of the date of the following next TBAWA State Championships
- SCA theory sessons are held leading up to the State Championships in January and Feburary and will be listed on the Events page of the TBAWA website.
- Umpires not holding a valid SCA will not be able to umpire at the State Championships.
Level 3 Umpire Accreditation
- Participants require a 90% or better pass rate in the online level 2 exam and are required to have umpired at least 10 State Championship games (with at least 5 being Plate) and then be assessed on a practical level the state Championships. Level 1 & 2 are prerequisites for this level.
- Particpants are expected to have an above average understanding of the rules and be extremly confident in their interpretation of those rules.
Level 4 Accrediting Umpires
- Level 4 umpires are expected to have an expert understanding of the rules and be extremely confident in their interpretation of those rules.
- They will have previously attained level 3 and umpired at leased 25 TBAWA carnival games.
- In order to achieve and retain level 4, a level 3 umpire shall receive some assessment training from the Chief Umpire or his/her appointee during at least two level 2 practical assessments.
- Level 4 Umpires are competent in the practical assessment of Level 2 Umpires.
- Level 4 can only be retained by a person with ongoing involvement with a tee-ball club or the TBAWA.
Level 5 Umpire Development Officers
- Level 5 umpires must have achieved level 4.
- To achieve level five participants are required to present at least two level one clinics. Assessment of performance will be by a panel of level 5 umpires.
- Applicants will be judged on course content, presentation skills and knowledge. Assessment of performance will be by: the chief Umpire or his/her appointee (who must be a level 5)
- Upon successful completion umpires must present at least one clinic per year to retain level 5.
- Level 5 Umpires are competent in the practical assessment and development of Level 1, 2, & 3 Umpires.
